5 to 8 Years (Emerging Readers), Mary Pope Osborne, Raising a Reader

Magic Tree House Chapter Books

Magic Tree House Chapter Books

Are you looking for chapter books to share with your emerging reader? When Annabelle was three, we started to read “Magic Tree House” series. “Magic Tree House” is written by Mary Pope Osborne, who researched to make each book entertaining and informative. The books follow the brother-sister duo, Jack and Annie, who happened upon a tree house in the woods. Jack’s insatiable desire to learn and Annie’s belief in magic allowed them to see the tree house when it would appear invisible to others. They embark on magical adventures inside the tree house that test their knowledge, strength, courage, and integrity. Each book introduces a new time and place, allowing Jack and Annie and the readers to learn how things differed in the past or different cultures from different regions. I love that the siblings work together to help complete the missions, even when they disagree.

Magic Tree House (Original Series)

The first book is about dinosaurs, and Annabelle loved anything dino when we started reading chapter books together, so this was a good introduction. The short chapters and illustrations allowed us to read a few chapters before bedtime and look forward to what Jack and Annie would do next. “Magic Tree House” books are recommended for ages 5-8.

Merlin Missions: The Magic Tree House

After finishing the original series, we started “Merlin Missions: Magic Tree House.” These books are geared toward 6-8-year-olds. The chapters and books are slightly longer, and the vocabulary is more challenging, but the intrigue still exists, which allowed us to finish the entire series quickly.

Jack and Annie exemplify the type of children you would want your child to be friends with or grow up to be. They are curious and kind. Jack is cautious and enjoys taking notes and discovering why, while Annie is brave and compassionate towards all living things.

My favorite part of each book was the beginning and ending:

“The wind started to blow.
The tree house started to spin.
It spun faster and faster.
Then everything was still.
Absolutely still.”

Annabelle would recite these lines with excitement each time we started or finished a book.

If you are looking for a great series, we highly suggest “Magic Tree House.” Libraries seem to have many, if not all, of the books in their catalogs, or they are available in box sets. We purchased the box sets, and I look forward to Annabelle revisiting them when she can read each book aloud to me.

Do you have a favorite chapter book or series of chapter books? We are on the hunt and would love your recommendations.
