Election Book List

The election is right around the corner and many kids may have questions about the yard signs, the commercials they are hearing, or the candidates themselves. We enjoy reading books that help us better understand upcoming events and here is a list of the books we have been reading to help with Election Day.

Sofia Valdez, Future Prez (The Questioneers) written by Andrea Beaty and illustrated by David Roberts.

We love the Questioneers and this book shows how Sofia gains courage and confidence to get something she believes in completed. The rhymes throughout the story make this an easy read and can help children understand why someone would want to run for president.

Sofia Valdez and the Vanishing Vote (The Questioneers) written by Andrea Beaty and illustrated by David Roberts.

If you loved the picture book with Sofia Valdez you should try the chapter book. This book is easy-to-read and features illustrations every few pages to help keep the attention of younger readers. As you read about the class pet election in Miss Greer’s second-grade class different aspects of campaigns, candidates, and the election process are explained in simple terms.

Baby Loves Political Science: Democracy! (Baby Loves Science) written by Ruth Spiro and illustrated by Greg Paprocki.

The Baby Loves series is wonderful for even the smallest of children. The vibrant illustrations and easy text make it easy to introduce the idea of democracy and how it works.

We Disagree written and illustrated by Bethanie Deeney Murguia.

Mouse and Squirrel just cannot agree but that is okay! Just because two friends don’t agree on everything doesn’t mean they still can’t be friends. During these heated debates, this title is important for all ages. The rhyming text makes it a joy to read aloud.

I Really Like Slop! (An Elephant and Piggie Book) written and illustrated by Mo Willems.

We are huge Elephant and Piggie fans around here and while this book doesn’t focus on elections it is similar to “We Disagree” where Elephant and Piggie may not share a love for slop but they still really enjoy each other’s company.

The Night Before Election Day written by by Natasha Wing and illustrated Amy Wummer.

If you receive the Highlight High Five magazine you may recognize the characters in this book. The book talks about election day and what it means to go vote and voice your choice.

If You Go with Your Goat to Vote by Jan Zauzmer and illustrated by Andrew Roberts.

In this silly book you will find out what happens when animal children go with their parents to vote. It is a cute introduction to the voting process that is sure to cause giggles.

I Voted: Making a Choice Makes a Difference by Mark Shulman Illustrated by Serge Bloch.

Voting broken down into its simplest terms- making a decision. It goes through easy decisions to more difficult decisions like cake or ice cream! This book helps explain why it is important to know your choices and make an informed decision. We have watched this book a few times on Vooks and love it.
